AI Overviews optimization: ranking is no longer the finish line
Google's AI Overviews sit above the blue links and answer the question before anyone scrolls. For some searches that is the end of the session: the answer was given, the click never happened.
This is uncomfortable for anyone whose traffic model assumed a ranking equals a visit. It is also not optional to deal with.
Ranking first does not guarantee inclusion
The sources named in an overview are frequently not the top result. Google is assembling an answer, and it draws from whichever pages state the relevant piece most clearly and most defensibly — which is often a page further down that happens to answer that precise sub-question directly.
That cuts both ways. A site sitting at position seven can be cited above a site at position one. If you have been treating position as the only scoreboard, you have been missing both a risk and an opening.
What to do about the lost clicks
Some queries will stop sending traffic regardless of what you do — the ones where a single sentence fully satisfies the searcher. Chasing those is wasted effort.
- Concede the definitional queries. "What is X" was never going to convert anyway.
- Defend the queries where the answer requires your specifics — prices, availability, comparisons, anything local.
- Optimise for being named rather than clicked on the rest. A citation still builds the brand recognition that produces a direct visit later.
