Generative Engine Optimization

Definition

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting a website cited inside answers produced by generative AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot. It is unrelated to geographic or local SEO, despite sharing the abbreviation.

For twenty years the goal was a position. Ten links, and your job was to be one of them. An answer engine does not hand out ten positions — it writes a paragraph and names two or three sources. The question changed from where do I rank to am I in the answer at all.

That is not a smaller version of the same problem. It is a different problem, with different signals, and the tools built for the first one do not measure the second.

The four reasons you are not cited

When an engine answers a question you should own and names someone else, the cause is almost always one of four things. We classify every missed citation into exactly these buckets, because the fix is different for each.

01ENTITY_UNCLEAR

The model cannot tell who you are

An answer engine will not name a source it cannot identify with confidence. If your pages never state plainly what the company is, what it does and where it operates, you are a page — not an entity. Entities get named; pages get paraphrased.

Fix — State identity in plain sentences, keep it consistent across every page, and back it with Organization schema that matches the visible text.

02UNSOURCED

Your claims have nothing behind them

Models are tuned to avoid repeating assertions they cannot support. A statistic with no origin is a liability to quote, so it gets dropped in favour of a source that shows its working.

Fix — Attach an origin to every number: who measured it, when, and by what method. Original measurement beats a citation of someone else's citation.

03NOT_EXTRACTABLE

The answer is in there, but not in a shape it can lift

Answer engines assemble responses from fragments. A definition buried in the middle of a 300-word paragraph is far less liftable than the same definition given as a single, self-contained sentence under a heading that matches the question.

Fix — Definitions, direct answers, tables and short labelled lists. Put the answer first, then the nuance.

04NO_CORROBORATION

Nobody else says it about you

One site asserting something about itself is weak evidence. Models weight claims that appear in more than one independent place — a review, a forum thread, a video, a mention in someone else's article.

Fix — Earn mentions, not just links. A nofollow mention on a trusted site still functions as corroboration even though it passes no ranking authority.

How to measure it

There is no console for this. No engine publishes a report telling you how often it quoted you. The only honest method is to ask the questions yourself and record what comes back.

  1. 1Take the questions your buyers actually ask — the ones where a purchase follows.
  2. 2Put each one to every engine that matters to your market, on a schedule.
  3. 3Record what was cited: your domain, a competitor, or nothing relevant.
  4. 4When you are absent, classify why using the four buckets above.
  5. 5Fix the specific cause, then ask again and see whether the answer changed.

Repeated over weeks this produces a citation share — the percentage of your money questions where an engine names you. It is the only number in GEO that behaves like a rank position: comparable over time, and attributable to the work that moved it.

Four things people get wrong

GEO means local or geographic SEO.

It does not. In this field GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. The name collision is unfortunate and genuinely confuses buyers — if a vendor uses the word without expanding it, ask which one they mean.

Publishing more articles improves AI citation.

Volume is close to irrelevant here. Answer engines quote what is clear, sourced and corroborated. A hundred thin posts add a hundred pages that no model has a reason to trust.

You can pay to appear in AI answers.

Not organically. Some surfaces carry advertising, but citation inside a synthesised answer is not for sale. That is precisely why it is worth working on.

GEO replaces SEO.

It does not. Answer engines still lean heavily on the crawlable web, and a site that cannot be crawled or understood will not be cited either. GEO sits on top of technical health, not instead of it.

From our own measurement

We measured 70 SEO, AI-SEO and answer-engine products against our own web graph of 236.7M domains and 7.12B links. The GEO tools — the newest category — have a median of 17 referring domains at DR 50+, against 119 for established SEO suites. The category selling citation has not yet earned much of it itself.

Questions

What does GEO stand for?+

Generative Engine Optimization — the practice of getting a website cited inside answers produced by generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot. It is unrelated to geographic or local SEO, despite the name.

How is GEO different from SEO?+

SEO competes for a position in a list of results. GEO competes to be named inside a single synthesised answer, where there may be only three or four sources cited. The signals differ: SEO rewards relevance and authority, while citation rewards clear entity identity, sourced claims, extractable structure and corroboration elsewhere.

How do you measure GEO?+

By asking the answer engines the questions your buyers ask, then recording whether your domain, a competitor, or nobody is cited. Repeating that over time gives a citation share per engine per question. Without that measurement, GEO work is guesswork.

Do backlinks still matter for AI citation?+

Indirectly. Links help you be crawled, ranked and trusted, and answer engines draw on that web. But mentions matter in a way links alone do not: a nofollow mention on a trusted site still corroborates a claim, even though it passes no ranking authority.

How long does GEO take?+

Structural fixes — entity clarity, sourcing, extractable formatting — can change citation behaviour within weeks, because engines re-read pages frequently. Corroboration takes longer, because it depends on other people writing about you.

We measure this for you, every week.

RankMerit tracks citation share across five answer engines for the questions you care about, classifies every miss into the four causes above, and fixes the cause — entities, sourcing, structure, corroboration. Alongside the technical and content work, not instead of it.
