You probably do not need a rank tracker

Before you pay for rank tracking, check what you already have. Google Search Console records the average position of every query your site appeared for, updated every few days, for free, going back sixteen months.

For most sites that is better data than a rank tracker, because it is not a sample. It is what actually happened to real searchers, including the ones on phones in a different city with a different search history.

Where Search Console wins

• It reports where you actually appeared, not where a datacentre in Virginia says you would appear
• It covers every query you rank for, not just the ones you thought to track
• It pairs position with impressions and clicks, so you can see which positions are worth anything
• It costs nothing

Where it genuinely falls short

Search Console can only tell you about searches where you already appeared at least once. If you are not ranking for a term at all, it is silent — and "nowhere" is exactly the position you most need to know about when you are starting.

What tracking is for

A number you watch and never act on is a hobby. Position data earns its keep in exactly one way: it tells you which page is close enough to be worth pushing.

A page at position 11 with real impressions is the most valuable thing in most accounts — Google has already decided you are relevant, and the click curve means moving it into the top five multiplies its traffic several times over. A page at 60 needs a different kind of work entirely, and no amount of tracking changes that.
