An automated SEO audit is cheap. Fixing it is the expensive part.

Auditing a website is a solved problem. A crawler can read every page you have and list every deviation from best practice in about the time it takes to make coffee. That is why audits are given away free: they cost almost nothing to produce.

The problem is what arrives. Three hundred issues, sorted by type rather than by consequence, with no indication of which four actually cost you money.

Most audit findings do not matter

A typical audit will flag missing alt text on decorative images, headings out of order in a footer, and a handful of redirect chains that no user will ever traverse. All technically true. None of it is why you are on page two.

Meanwhile the finding that actually matters — a noindex tag left on a template after a redesign, a robots rule blocking a whole section — sits in the same list at the same visual weight.

Sorting by consequence, not by type

A useful audit answers one question per finding: if I fix this, what changes? For most items the honest answer is "nothing measurable", and saying so is more valuable than listing it.

  • Blocking issues first — indexing, crawling, duplication. These come before everything.
  • Then issues on pages that already have impressions, where a fix converts existing visibility into clicks.
  • Then everything else, which is usually most of the list, and can wait indefinitely.

Why audits pile up

The reason most audits produce no improvement is not that the findings were wrong. It is that a list is not a change. Somebody has to open the CMS, find the template, edit the tag, and confirm it deployed — and that person is usually busy running the business the site belongs to.

So the audit gets rerun next quarter and reports the same 300 issues, slightly rearranged. [internal: what turns a finding into an applied change]
