Best SEO automation tools: what the category actually looks like

Every list of the best SEO automation tools is written by someone selling one of them, and the ranking is decided by whoever pays the most affiliate commission. This one is decided by measurement, and it includes our own numbers — which are the worst on the page.

Three categories, not one

"SEO automation" covers three products that do almost nothing alike. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this market.

None of the three closes the loop on its own. A suite tells you what is wrong. A writing tool produces pages regardless of whether they help. A monitoring tool watches a problem it cannot fix.

What we measured

We took 70 products across those three groups and measured their referring domains against our own web graph — 236.7 million domains and 7.12 billion links, rebuilt from Common Crawl. Not opinions about the tools: the links pointing at them.

The newer the category, the thinner the editorial authority behind it. That is not automatically damning — every established brand was new once — but it does tell you which products have been reviewed, cited and argued about by people outside their own marketing department.

How to choose without reading another listicle

• Decide which of the three problems you actually have. If your site is technically broken, a writing tool cannot help you.
• Ask what happens after the tool tells you something. If the answer is "you do it", price your own hours into the subscription.
• Ask what stops it publishing something bad. Most AI writing tools have no answer, because nothing does.
• Check the tool's own visibility for its own category terms. A product that cannot rank itself is telling you something.
