LLM SEO: what changes when the answer replaces the list
Data: RankMerit Authority Index; Google Ads Keyword Planner
LLM SEO is the work of getting a language model to name your site when it answers a question in your field. It is not a rebrand of SEO and it is not a replacement for it — the signals overlap, but the goal is different enough to change what you do first.
One answer, three sources
A search results page gives ten positions and a scroll. An answer engine writes a paragraph and cites two or three sources. There is no page two to be on, and there is no consolation prize for being fourth.
That compresses the competition brutally. It also changes what wins: a page can be the tenth-best article on a topic and still get quoted, if it happens to state one fact more clearly and more verifiably than the other nine.
What models actually reward
| Signal | Why it matters to a model |
|---|---|
| A plain, self-contained definition | It can be lifted whole without the model having to paraphrase and risk distorting it |
| Claims with a stated source | Repeating an unsupported assertion is a liability; a sourced one is safe |
| A clearly identified organisation | A model will not name a source it cannot identify with confidence |
| The same fact stated elsewhere | One site asserting something about itself is weak evidence |
| Structure it can parse | Answers are assembled from fragments, not read like an essay |
Notice how little of that is about writing quality in the literary sense. A beautifully written page with no sources and no clear author is close to unquotable.
Where the category stands
We measured 70 SEO and answer-engine products against our own web graph of 236.7 million domains. The tools selling AI visibility have a median of 17 referring domains with real editorial authority, against 119 for the established SEO suites.
That is worth knowing before you buy: the category advising you on citation has not, for the most part, earned much of it yet. [internal: the full measurement]
Where to start
- Ask the engines your own money questions and write down who they cite. Without that baseline everything else is guessing.
- Fix identity first — if a model cannot tell what your company is in one sentence, nothing else helps.
- Attach an origin to every number on your site. Unsourced statistics are the most common reason a page is passed over.
- Put the answer in a shape that can be lifted: definition, then detail.
